What is a VPS?
A VPS (virtual private server) is your own virtual server on shared hardware. Unlike web hosting, you get fixed resources such as CPU cores, memory and storage that you do not share with other customers.
You have full root access and choose your own operating system and software. This makes a VPS suitable for custom applications, busy websites, development and test environments, and services that cannot run on web hosting.
When should you choose a VPS instead of web hosting?
- You want to run your own software or a specific version of PHP, Node.js or a database.
- Your website needs guaranteed computing power, even during peak times.
- You want full control over server settings, the firewall and updates.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a VPS and web hosting?
With web hosting you share a managed server with other customers and we take care of the software. With a VPS you get dedicated, fixed resources and full root access, and you manage the server yourself.
Do I need technical knowledge for a VPS?
Yes, a VPS requires basic knowledge of Linux server administration. If you do not have that, web hosting is usually the better choice.
Where is the VPS located?
In a data centre in Amsterdam, within the European Union.
